This report demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and shows the action we’ve taken and progress made to positively impact the environment, people and communities we work with over the last 12 months.

We measure our priorities against the UN Sustainable Development Goals, making sure we see tangible progress on our actions, year on year. Our 2022 report shows a considerable increase from 2021 in the positive impact we’ve made across our five key priority areas. These include:

1. Reducing our environmental impact and continually improving business performance

We reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by 18.7%, decreased waste to landfill by 10.1%, and reduced our tenancy water consumption by 19%.

We also retained our Carbon Neutral Status for our global operations for the second year in a row and remain committed to achieving Net Zero Status for our business operations by FY26.

2. Supporting the health, safety and wellbeing of our people

The health, safety and wellbeing of our people was prioritised through a number of initiatives including NDY Flex, NDY Pride, NDY Carers and our Health and Safety programs.

In the first quarter of 2022 we also measured employee satisfaction with our annual employee engagement.  Results showed that 90% of respondents had the systems and tools needed to work effectively from home, 91% felt fully supported if they chose to make use of flexible working arrangements and 77% knew how to access health and wellbeing resources.

I have what I need to work effectively from home
I feel fully supported if I choose flexible work arrangements
I know how to access health and wellbeing resources

In 2022 NDY was proud to be named an employer of choice for gender equality by Workplace Gender Equality Agency, a citation we have held since 2018. Only 120 employers in Australia received this recognition.

3. Engaging and supporting our communities

NDY continued to engage with and support communities across the globe through the NDY Charitable Trust and other initiatives, including our efforts to build First Nations understanding and support First Nations peoples in the countries where we operate. Inspired by the progress towards reconciliation by our Australian business, our New Zealand team formed the Te Aō Māori working group at the end of 2021 after the development of Te Rautaki Māori ō NDY earlier in the year. Te Rautaki Māori ō NDY served as the initial guidance for how NDY would undergo transformation, including understanding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and our role as treaty partners.

The working group comprises of representatives from both Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) and Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara (Wellington). The moemoea (dream) of this group is to weave the values of Te Aō Māori into our offices and bring to light the symmetry that already exists between NDY and Te Aō Māori. From this understanding we aspire to connect on a personal level, one of aroha (affection and understanding) with Iwi. This is a journey of discovery that NDY is fully committed to.

4. Leading by example – conducting ethical and sustainable business practices

We continued enhancing our policies and systems to embed sustainability across our business, which included rolling out Whole of Life Carbon Training to all NDY staff as part of our commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. We also improved our employee onboarding, graduate training and leadership training programs.

We’ve established a strong governance framework to ensure our principles, standards, actions and outcomes align Delivering leading, innovative and sustainable projects for our clients.

5. Delivering leading, innovative and sustainable projects for our clients.

A critical goal of our ESG strategy is to help clients reduce their environmental footprint and maximise the community benefits of their buildings, facilities and infrastructure. We are proud to have continued our work in delivering leading, innovative and sustainable projects for our clients, including the first WELL Health-Safety rated stadium in the Asia-Pacific region and the first WELL Certified project in New Zealand.

This report serves as our promise to regularly communicate our ESG actions and the progress we are making against our objectives and strategy.
