The Bright Alliance Building housing the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre (NCCC), Scientia Clinical Research (SCR) and Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, delivered a purpose built cancer care facility within the Prince of Wales hospital precinct, consolidating cutting edge treatment options within a single building and creating a comfortable and accessible space for the community.

Paying homage to the hospital’s long history in the provision of cancer care, the 10 storey facility was constructed in the footprint of the Prince of Wales’ existing radiotherapy department. The building accommodates the NCCC across five levels, with two levels for SCR and a further three levels housing the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network.

Staging considerations were carefully addressed during the design process to address the live hospital environment and ensure continuity of radiation oncology treatment services for patients during demolition of the existing radiotherapy department building, and construction and interfacing of both stages of the project. The staged program produced the following outcomes:

  • Stage 1 delivered a new underground single storey facility housing four radiotherapy bunkers with digital linear accelerators and supporting areas
  • Stage 2 completed the project with construction of a 10 storey building, linked via underground corridor to the Stage 1 underground facility and incorporating the Radiation Oncology Department, consulting suites, ambulatory care and clinical trials functions. Specialist areas within the facility include CT scanning rooms, a brachytherapy treatment suite, PC2 clinical trials laboratory and an ISO Grade 8 investigational products suite clean room facility.

The project delivers advanced cancer treatment and research facilities for NSW, with an innovative offering that will serve the community well into the future.
