ALDI Distribution Centre takes out top honours
Cockram Construction’s Queensland division received two Master Builders Awards at the recent 2016 Master Builders Awards ceremony for The ALDI Distribution Centre. This project won two Awards for Best Industrial Facility and Innovation in Workplace Health and Safety.
The ALDI Distribution Centre incorporated the design and construction of a 50,000 sq m warehouse and office, ambient warehouse and coolhouse facilities, along with associated civil and landscaping works.
The facility is one of only four Greenstar As-Built rated industrial facilities in Queensland.
Sustainable initiatives and design principles for the facility included; water harvesting and recycling, energy efficiency and co-ordination within the refrigeration plant to eliminate synthetic refrigerants, and the minimisation of PVC and volatile organic compounds in its construction.
NDY director and project leader on the ALDI facility Frank Bakker says NDY played a key role in the early design of the building services and criteria for the sustainability features adopted by the D&C team.
“We investigated several options and provided advice and designs that led to significant efficiencies, particularly in the elimination of synthetic refrigerants,” says Bakker.
“There’s a general perception that industrial facilities equate to excessive waste, a heavy reliance on natural resources and polluting practices. However with the ALDI distribution centre we greatly mitigated the impact on the environment through water recycling, improved energy usage and a comprehensive uptake on the use of biodegradable materials.”
The sustainability outcomes achieved at the ALDI Distribution Centre have been recognised by a 4 star Green Star – Industrial Design v1 rating.
The ALDI Distribution Centre was delivered as a Design and Construct contract with Jacobs providing completion of the Design and APP Corporation as Project Managers. Cockram acknowledge the wider delivery team which comprised of: PDT Architects; Umow lai; ECS; Vee Design; Philip Chun; Norman Disney Young; Opus International Consultants; CW Consulting; Saunders Havill Group; ISECO.
