Give us an overview of your team and global reach?
The mechanical team in Melbourne consists of 10 engineers working on a range of projects across market sectors. We regularly collaborate with our colleagues across the other NDY offices in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada. We also maintain open communication with the global Tetra Tech High Performance Buildings Group to share ideas and project experiences.
What are the biggest trends you’re seeing in the industrial sector right now?
With automation and robotics, there’s a big shift in how these large facilities are designed and operated. This has raised the bar for project design due to the increased complexity and criticality.
Why mechanical engineering?
Mechanical engineering in buildings is complicated and satisfying. There are always many different systems that can be applied to solve a project problem and the solution is always a balance between many different variables. The end product is also very visual. It’s a great experience to go through the commissioning stage and see all of the equipment work together to satisfy the design and our client’s requirements.
What do you do outside of work that helps fuel your creativity and commitment to engineering?
I really enjoy playing card and board games with my wife and friends. I find the process of developing strategies and using them to solve problems within the rules of the games is very satisfying.
What professional relationships do you value the most?
It’s difficult to say that I value some professional relationships more than others. The industry we work in is extremely fast-paced and what I value the most is forming many relationships so there’s always a person to learn something from, bounce ideas off or just unwind with.
What does Making Spaces Work mean to you?
Making Spaces Work is about finding building solutions for our clients that go beyond minimum standards. I take pride in not only delivering design that meets current needs but is also capable of evolving to meet business needs well into the future.
