NDY was appointed by the consortium redeveloping the AFL Stadium at Carrara on the Gold Coast which increased stadium capacity from 8,000 to 25,000 and is now the home of the Gold Coast Football Club.

The stadium is capable of hosting cricket, entertainment and cultural events and has 2,000 corporate seats with a range of corporate facilities, including: Chairman’s lounge, Field Club, Club Lounge, Corporate Suites and BBQ Decks. It also features merchandising outlets, catering facilities and media, player and officials’ facilities.

Full solar photovoltaic (PV) panelling up to five metres in width were installed around the inner edge of the stadium’s roof. In a Queensland first the installation of solar panelling generates approximately 275,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per annum, or more than 20 per cent of the stadium’s total electricity needs – equivalent to powering more than 250 Queensland homes.

The unique solar element makes the Carrara Stadium the largest solar stadium in the southern hemisphere.

AFL Stadium Development Manager Simon Gorr agreed the stadium set a new benchmark in AFL stadium design. Carrara Stadium offers the ultimate spectator experience for the live event, in a stadium that showcases cost effective and distinctive design. NDY’s contributions to the Carrara Stadium, home of the Gold Coast SUNS enables the stadium to be highly functional.
