When a global data centre provider sought to elevate safety standards across their facilities, NDY was entrusted with a critical mission: to conduct comprehensive arc flash analysis for over 30 data centres spanning the UK and Europe.
Arc flash refers to the release of intense heat and energy caused by an electrical fault, which poses a significant hazard. The client’s primary goal was clear—to mitigate arc flash risks, ensuring that the incident energy at each site remained below 25 cal/cm², prioritising operator safety and the protection of vital equipment.
Spanning 15 years of construction, these data centres vary in size, infrastructure and regional influences, reflecting diverse client design preferences and local regulations. Our task was to conduct a meticulous review of each facility’s existing electrical systems, identifying gaps and ensuring accurate data collection. This foundation allowed us to model the systems precisely, setting the stage for a thorough analysis and tailored solutions.
The uniqueness of each site—shaped by technological advancements and specific client needs—meant that no two data centres were the same. High-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) systems featured different configurations for feeders, transformers, generators and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) setups. NDY’s approach was as dynamic as the challenge, adopting bespoke strategies for each facility. This included optimising the coordination and selectivity of protective devices to suit the specific characteristics of each infrastructure.
NDY’s early adoption of arc flash analysis and safe electrical system implementation has played a key role in this international rollout project. By enhancing the safety and reliability of each data centre’s electrical systems, we’ve helped our client safeguard both their personnel and critical equipment, ensuring a safer and more secure environment across their entire network.
