The relocation of Mercy Hospital for Women to new premises in Heidelberg made way for the Mercy Health & Aged Care (MHAC) the operating entity of the Health & Aged Care Ministry to establish a 110-bed high and low care aged care facility with GFA of 8,000 m2 in East Melbourne.
The facility is designed to support a range of conditions including:
• Low dependency care
• High dependency care
• Dementia related care.
The new Gipps Street facility comprises:
• Basement 2: car parking and plant
• Basement 1: car parking plant, laundry, stores, staff change, and workshop
• Ground floor: administration, meeting rooms, bedrooms dining, lounge, hairdresser
• First and second floors: bedrooms, dining, lounges, stores, treatment rooms and staff bases
• Level 3 (Roof): ESS Club Lounge and plant.
Mechanical services encompassed air-conditioning to living spaces, offices, meeting and staff rooms, treatment rooms, chapel, training rooms, lounges and dining rooms. Lobbies and circulation areas were ventilated with tempered air.
In terms of fire protection, the building was greatly complicated by being one of a number of buildings on the site each with separate titles but linked through necessity because the car parks were linked with the apartment building at 150 Clarendon Street and shared a common vehicular entry and exit.
