The Meridian Dam Amenities project was a comprehensive feasibility assessment for the remediation of facilities at seven hydropower dam sites on the South Island of New Zealand. Our goal was to determine the practicability of improving workplace services amenities while considering budget constraints, compliance requirements and unique site-specific challenges.

The seven dam sites included:

  • Waitaki
  • Aviemore
  • Benmore
  • Ohau-A
  • Ohau-B
  • Ohau-C
  • Manapouri.

Each site had distinct characteristics and variations in capacity, infrastructure, age and spending history. Therefore, a bespoke scheme for improvement was developed for each site, with a focus on four core engineering services to address life safety risks and compliance.

The primary challenge was to evaluate the magnitude of work required for each site and provide Meridian with a clear understanding of the implications to site services and costings. This was particularly crucial, as our risk assessment revealed that there was a need to address the services’ code compliance. Our client required transparency regarding the cost and scope of the intended upgrades.

NDY conducted a rigorous assessment of each dam site, involving engagement with dam management teams at each location. We identified and documented compliance and operational risks and proposed improvements such as concept designs and new ventilation systems.

Leveraging our reports, Meridian gained insights into the implications and costs of remediation and compliance upgrades. Through these findings, dam management teams could implement improvement schemes for their respective facilities with confidence.
