NDY was appointed as framework consultants to the Victoria & Albert Museum, colloquially known as ‘The V&A’. The major campus is in South Kensington, London.

The V&A is like a ‘mini city’ spread over a 12.5 acre estate and comprises a wide range of buildings, some of which date back to the mid-19th century.

The museum embarked on a 10 year, £150 m upgrade programme. NDY’s role in this programme covers an array of projects which require careful integration within the complex of listed and heritage buildings.

NDY’s completed projects at the V&A include refurbishments of the following Galleries:

  • Series of new Paintings Galleries including the works of John Constable
  • Transformation of the Gilbert Bayes Sculpture Gallery
  • Upgrading of the Miniatures Gallery
  • Sacred Silver & Stained Glass Gallery.

Further NDY projects include the modernisation of the Jewellery Gallery, the V&A’s most expensive collection, completed in September 2008; and the refurbishment of the Ceramics Gallery, an unrivalled collection of pottery from all over the world, completed in 2009.

Owing to the nature of the building and its high number of visitors, all refurbishments were carried out whilst the building was occupied and operational. NDY understood the intricacies of such works including awareness for noise generation, fire strategy and evacuation procedures. Additionally, maintaining supplies to adjacent areas was essential in order to avoid adversely affecting the visitor experience.
