I have always been an active acoustician, working first in Venezuela for both the public and private sectors (including a stint on radio). I joined NDY in 2016 and since 2020 I’ve been managing the Sydney acoustic section from Auckland, New Zealand. Starting with my engineering thesis, my love of acoustics grew from the design of a computational program to select reactive mufflers for industrial applications, and experimental testing of a specific model to calibrate the expected theoretical results from equations. I was hooked!
Working across multiple sectors to deliver architectural acoustic designs, perhaps one of the more unusual projects I’ve worked on is Sydney’s Fortress eSports & Gaming venue. It’s a versatile gaming hub for eSports tournaments, game launches and corporate events, with LAN areas, a games arcade, bar, tavern, broadcasting areas, lounges and private gaming rooms… basically it’s got everything the gamer (and the corporate gamer) could ever want under one roof.
We started with an assessment of the different acoustic requirements for wall privacy separation, internal noise, and the challenging reverberation requirements for the different spaces. The Sydney project followed the guidelines of the successful Fortress Melbourne venue, which NDY also worked on, and required a tight coordination between client requirements and base building construction to ensure the venue would not affect neighbouring tenancies, and would also meet architectural intent and integrate well with other building services. Further to the internal acoustic fitout review, a complete acoustic DA report was submitted to council assessing the noise and vibration impacts within the Central Park Mall in Chippendale, Sydney. Our input provided good acoustics for all areas – a harmonic inclusion, if you will.
