I’ve been part of the NDY acoustic team’s journey for the past 5 years, starting as a graduate in the Auckland office before ‘crossing the ditch’ to join our Melbourne team. Attention to detail and self-motivation mean I deliver well thought-out and quality solutions to meet client needs. I aim to please! My interest in acoustics stems from a passion for improving the quality of living and efficient use of the spaces which surround us, aligning with NDY’s core value of ‘making spaces work’.
It’s been a thrill to be part of the Wurriki Nyal Civic Precinct in Geelong, which is a purpose-built commercial hub with state-of-the-art environmental features. Completed in 2022, the premium building comprises a secure carpark, ground floor customer service area and end-of-trip facilities, and 5 office levels with a total Net Lettable Area (NLA) of approximately 9,400 m². It’s a big regional facility that will serve the community well.
Notably, the structure above the podium floor slab is made of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), with exposed services penetrating through large timber beams. Along with the services, the feel of the building incorporated vast amounts of exposed CLT which presented a technical challenge for acoustics.
As a result, a strong focus on acoustic comfort was required to ensure that speech privacy, reverberation times and internal noise levels were consistent throughout the building. It took an iterative engineering process to deliver a refined acoustic design that was moulded into the architectural intent, whilst achieving required performance criteria that ensure a harmonious, comfortable and safe experience for both tenants and the Geelong community.
