Albion Park Raceway is Queensland’s premier greyhound and harness racing venue. The Russ Hinze Stand is the main grandstand for the site; it was constructed in 1983. Due to structural failure the Grandstand was deemed to be unsafe, subsequently condemned and plans were made for its demolition. The main services for the site were integrated into the grandstand, and as such its demolition affected the entire site.
NDY was commissioned to produce a building services design to isolate all building services from the Grandstand and integrate upgrades to the remainder of the site while keeping the site operational. The projects challenges included:
- As there were no services plans available, a survey of all services was required to document the existing electrical cabling, drainage and other services
- The completion of a design that would allow the works to be undertaken without having to enter the unsafe areas of the site.
The following design works were completed to enable the racecourse to remain operational while the grandstand was demolished:
- Removal of transformers from the grandstand and connecting the site to a new transformer substation
- Design of new mains cabling and associated trenching and pits to existing distribution boards and track lighting
- Isolation of all services to the grandstand from the adjacent buildings
- Design of a new Main Switch Board (MSB)
- Track lighting design to satisfaction of the live TV Broadcast requirements
- Design of fire services to gain approval by QFRS
- Safe isolation of the equipment and services in preparation for demolition
- Relocation of the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) and Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF)
- Rerouting of the communications fibre and copper carrier cables
- Isolation of the sewer, stormwater, cold/hot water and gas services to the satisfaction of BCC.
The grandstand demolition was completed by Watpac in late 2009.
