The Illawarra Regional Cancer Care Centre (IRCCC) was a joint major capital works project between the Commonwealth under HHF Funding and NSW State Government. The project delivered an expansion to the existing building to include the following expansion of service which involved:
- An additional radiotherapy bunker and one linear accelerator, including associated equipment to deliver enhanced radiotherapy services
- Co-located ambulatory services in outpatient clinic and consultation areas, providing multidisciplinary clinics, allowing patients to have their treatment program planned in one visit with increased access to medical oncology; radiation therapy (for both treatment and palliation); allied health; and support services
- Increased existing treatment capacity for chemotherapy services by increasing the existing 11 chemotherapy treatment places (7 chairs and 4 beds) to 17 treatment places (11 chairs and 6 beds).
A key challenge of this project was the integration of the new building areas within the existing facility with minimal disruption. A staged completion and handover strategy with multiple decant stages was required, with NDY designing the systems to incorporate each staged approach. This consisted of an upgrade of the electrical infrastructure and the Cancer Centre’s main computer room.
Detailed coordination was also required with the medical equipment supplier to confirm that the engineering requirements were met and documented sufficiently to ensure the seamless installation of a new Varian Linear Accelerator.
