The Metropolitan Remand Centre is a modern, purpose built remand facility, originally built in 2005. NDY was engaged to document a new 75 room mainstream accommodation building (two storeys – ground and level 1) in the existing prison grounds at the Metropolitan Remand Centre, Ravenhall.
The facility includes 50 rooms of single beds and 25 rooms with bunk beds, providing a total population of 100 prisoners.
The nature of the project resulted in a range of unique engineering challenges including:
- Strict Cell and Fire Safety Guidelines
- Minimisation of self harm to vulnerable inmates
- Prevention of wilful damage of systems caused by inmates
- Long term maintenance access and costs.
The following sustainability initiatives were incorporated into the design of the engineering system:
- Rain water harvesting and reuse for irrigation
- Selection of energy efficient plant and equipment
- Use of high efficiency light fittings
- Provision of double glazed windows and thermal insulation to minimise heating and cooling requirements.
