The NSW Government is investing $673.3 million in health for the Tweed Valley to deliver a new, state-of-the-art hospital with more beds and increased healthcare services, along with interim upgrades at The Tweed Hospital. This is the largest regional capital health investment funded entirely by the NSW Government.

The Tweed Valley Hospital will be a major referral hospital at the heart of the network of hospitals and health facilities across the Tweed-Byron region. It will provide the health services required to meet the needs of the growing population of the region beyond 2032.

HVAC Australia, the mechanical contractor of the project, contracted NDY to provide the mechanical systems design for this new major regional hospital. NDY’s role included the mechanical design, health presentation and services coordination of the trades for a D&C contractor. Our ability to provide cost effective design solutions, meeting prefabricated design solutions, whilst maintaining stringent energy targets, low emissions, close control spaces and client requirements within a tight timeframe has seen NDY subsequently engaged for review roles and construction supervision roles on the project.

The design utilises a new generation of hospital air handling system further developed since it was first implemented during our work on the award-winning Bendigo Hospital. Our solution reduces plant space considerably and improves design flexibility to add thermal control zones as the building changes during design phases, to meet building comfort requirements without major plant space impacts. This is an innovative blend using a traditional multizone air handler modified in concept, components and operation to reflect current modern design principles with variable airflow, humidity control via zones, independent thermal zone air temperature management and can incorporate VAV sub-zoning or constant volume, giving a consistent solution across the site for ease of future maintenance and speed of construction. An example of NDY innovation reflected in this and similar hospital projects.

The new Tweed Valley Hospital will deliver:

  • More operating theatres and recovery spaces
  • Expanded emergency department
  • Enhanced medical, surgical and mental health services
  • Enhanced ambulatory care services including more outpatient clinics
  • New interventional cardiology service
  • New radiotherapy service as part of a new integrated cancer care service.

The development will provide the community access to more health services closer to home, which will enable patients to remain near family, friends and existing support networks. It will reduce the need for 5,000 patients to travel outside the region each year to receive treatment.

The main works construction of the new hospital commenced in January 2021. The Tweed Valley Hospital is on track to open to patients in 2023.
