NDY was appointed as the engineering consultant for the expansion of Charlestown Square Shopping Centre in Sydney.  The expansion involved the creation of an additional 45,000 m2 of new internal shopping malls, specialty shops, mini majors, restaurants, cafes, food tenancies, bowling alley, a youth and community centre, commercial space and cinema complex. This brings the centre to a total of 90,000sqm including 2,300 car spaces.

The project also involved the establishment of a new off-site childcare centre, sporting fields (St John Oval and Charlestown Oval) and the new Charlestown Bowling Club with four bowling greens.

The electrical services for the project were unique, involving an existing centre purchasing power as a low voltage customer and the new centre purchasing energy as a high voltage customer, utilising cogeneration and a new embedded metering network. This allows the owner to on-charge customers for energy usage as a local network provider.

The electrical needs for the new centre are served by three new distribution substations with power reticulated throughout the centre via node rooms set-up to service the electrical, communications and security services to each area of the site.

An extensive security services system was installed including comprehensive CCTV coverage with people-counting utilising a digital security and DVR system.
