NDY was approached by Transport for London (TfL) to modernise the lighting scheme at their ‘Palestra’ HQ building in Southwark as part of their net zero carbon pathway. The fluorescent fittings were replaced with LED and lighting control systems upgraded as a cost effective means of reducing operational energy.

An innovative organic response lighting control system has been installed – intelligent sensors within the luminaries read daylight levels and automatically provide the appropriate light level required, helping to maximise operational efficiency and provide enhanced visual comfort.

Detailed lighting modelling enabled a 35% reduction in luminaires compared to the original install, whilst achieving CIBSE best practice.

Surveys and validations enabled the re-use of electrical infrastructure and architectural elements – reducing programme, costs, and embodied carbon. As an occupied building, the works were all undertaken out-of-hours. A detailed phasing strategy and close coordination with the contractor minimised impact to occupants and downtime of services.

The architectural lighting scheme has been enriched in the breakout spaces and meeting rooms, whilst working within TfL’s budget.
