The landmark London Stores building, located in the prominent GPO precinct in Melbourne’s CBD, was constructed in 1925 and holds historical significance as one of Melbourne’s major retail emporiums in the mid-20th century.
NDY was engaged to design services upgrades for the mixed-use redevelopment of this former department store. Remaining sensitive to the heritage nature of the building, the project delivered seven new retail and hospitality spaces across multiple floors, in addition to high profile co-workspace.
The refurbishment accommodated existing and new retailers, posing significant challenges in ensuring that works were sensitive to existing tenants who continued to occupy the building throughout the project.
The project delivered improved user comfort for tenants through a quality indoor environment, with upgrades also reducing energy consumption via modern amenities and fixtures.
The redevelopment of the London Stores building has ensured that this grand retail landmark meets functional requirements now and well into the future.
